Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to derive a nursing leadership competency inventory of company-grade nursing officers and to develop it in terms of competence.

Methods : The development of a competency model was performed in four phases. The First was the data collection phase. Data consisted of measured levels of nursing leadership competencies of company- grade nursing officers using the literature review on nursing and leadership competencies. In all, Sixty two competencies were collected. The Second was the extraction phase. All nursing officers shall exert a preliminary nursing leadership competency inventory of 62 competencies through the 1st expert delphi-investigation. As a result of the 1st expert delphi-investigation, the names and definitions of seventeen preliminary nursing competencies were extracted. Furthermore, these preliminary nursing competencies were categorized into the following: Common, Process, and Professional competency groups based on a general category that was applied in the area of Human Resource Management. Other components including knowledge skill attitude and 87 behavioral indicators according to each preliminary nursing competency were developed. The 3rd phase was the development of a provisional nursing leadership competency model through the 2nd expert delphi -investigation. As a result of the 2nd expert delphi-investigation, a provisional nursing leadership competency model was comprised of 17 nursing leadership competencies and 78 behavioral indicators in relation to the 4 levels of proficiency.(P1¢¦P4). In the last phase, face validity and important degree test were examined in a provisional nursing leadership competency model by company-grade nursing officers.

Results : Based on these results, the researcher of this study made a final confirmation on the nursing leadership competency model that had 17 different competencies on the proficiency level rating scale(P1~P4).
